Key Characteristics of Autism
01.
— Communication and Language
People with autism may struggle with both verbal and nonverbal communication. Some may have delayed language development or be nonverbal, while others may speak fluently but have difficulty understanding figurative language or emotional tone.
02.
— Social Interaction
Individuals with autism often find it challenging to interpret and respond to social interactions. This can manifest as avoiding eye contact, having trouble understanding gestures and facial expressions, or struggling to build relationships.
03.
— Repetitive Behaviors
Repetitive actions, such as hand-flapping, spinning objects, or following specific routines, are common. These behaviors often provide a sense of stability and predictability.
04.
— Intense Interests
Many people with autism show deep, focused interests, sometimes on specific topics like dinosaurs, trains, or an academic subject.
05.
— Sensory Sensitivity
It’s common for individuals with autism to have unusual sensitivity to sensory stimuli, like lights, sounds, textures, or tastes. This can make certain environments or situations uncomfortable or distressing for them.
